The Role:
This position takes a lead role in NW Natural’s commitment to a low carbon energy future and role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. NW Natural has identified proven approaches and multiple pathways.
This role will champion research and development projects, workgroups, and studies to facilitate the integration of hydrogen related projects into NW Natural’s gas system. Incorporate best practices learned from external networks into NW Natural policies, procedures, and business processes. Oversee design engineering, planning, and coordination of hydrogen blending and methanization related projects requiring a higher level of project management and technical knowledge. Provide design and project management expertise for NW Natural’s gas and hydrogen related facilities, including receiving stations, control systems, compressors, pyrolysis, electrolyzers, and specialized equipment as required. Ensure fulfillment of installation commitments while meeting customer needs, cost objectives, governmental requirements, and safety and engineering standards.
Day to Day:
- Responsible for research and development, special projects, and technical studies from planning to final completion. Take lead on engaging with third party developers, suppliers, and agencies that may supply hydrogen sources and related equipment.
- Oversees design engineering, planning, coordination, and monitoring of projects related to hydrogen blending with natural gas (Power to Gas), natural gas pyrolysis, and hydrogen methanization. Provides cost analysis of alternatives to determine cost effective installation practices.
- Coordinates with Engineering Station Design team and oversees engineering design and construction of Station projects involving large city gates, regional stations, and special projects.
- Provides design and project management expertise for NW Natural’s gas and hydrogen related facilities, including; pyrolysis systems, intake stations, control systems, compressors, electrolyzers, and specialized equipment as required.
- Maintains ongoing communication with local and state regulatory agencies, third party entities, and construction contractors to protect the Company’s interest.
- Responds to a variety of inquiries/concerns from customers, NW Natural personnel, or the public.
- Reviews and approves construction drawings to ensure engineering standards are followed. Coordinates with office and field personnel to optimize the use of resources.
- Represents NW Natural as a subject matter expert and participates in industry and/or standards committees while promoting a culture of innovation and leadership in hydrogen technologies.
- Participates in after-hour emergency response program in conjunction with other operations supervisors.
- Assists in preparing budget, analyzing costs/benefits; continuously evaluates cost reduction and revenue enhancement opportunities.
- This position may require travel.

Come on your first day with:
- Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably mechanical, civil or chemical engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Engineering (Level 3) requires at least 5 years of experience, Engineering (Level 4) requires at least 8 years of experience.
- Ability to register as a Professional Engineer (PE) is highly desired.
- Experience executing new processes, process equipment, or process control changes.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in construction-related work required or utility construction/installation is preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in a leadership role overseeing and coordinating complex planning and project implementation programs.
- Ability to plan and effectively manage a wide variety of construction projects.
- Demonstrated skill in organizing multiple tasks and managing time effectively to meet deadlines and balance priorities consistent with Company strategies and goals.
- Knowledge and experience in the application of the following: National Fire Protection Association standards, federal pipeline safety rules, American Public Works Association, construction standards, and OSHA regulations.
- Ability to communicate effectively with employees, government representatives and contractor personnel on technical matters governing construction projects.
- Ability to analyze budget reports and construction summaries.
- Ability to develop new construction approaches and procedures.
- Strong writing skills including technical documentation and report preparation.
- Ability to visit and access construction and other work site locations as required.
- Possess/maintain a valid Oregon or Washington driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

Base salary range: $104,250.00 - $148,550.00 (Level 3) or $116,750.00 - $166,400.00 (Level 4) per year, depending on qualifications
Annual Target Incentive: Level 3, 12.0% target
Level 4, 12.0% target
Targets are calculated using eligible earnings during plan year participation. Payout, if earned, is based on company and individual performance for each plan year and may range from 0% – 200% of target. Targets are subject to change in subsequent plan years. Must be employed by September 30 in order to receive any prorated payout.
