The Role:

 

NW Natural seeks a Climate & Environmental Policy Specialist to join a small team reporting to the Environmental Policy and Programs Manager. 


The specialist’s primary focus will be to analyze and interpret both external policies and internal initiatives in service to the company’s decarbonization and sustainability efforts.  NW Natural has set its sites on carbon neutrality by 2050 through a suite of decarbonization efforts. Day to Day:

 

  • Monitor environmental policy landscape at the municipal, state and federal level to ensure coordinated response and broad awareness within the company. 
  • Communicate company environmental goals to a variety of stakeholders
  • Support organizational sustainability initiatives
  • Work with company Sustainability, Equity and Engagement Committee on employee led efforts toward greater sustainability and environmental justice
  • Participate in the analysis of energy and climate policies with focus on greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation in the energy sector 
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams relevant to the interplay between energy, climate and environmental policy
  • Participate relevant in agency workshops and conferences

Academic Background

 

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in public policy, environmental science, political science, applied natural sciences, other relevant discipline or combination of education and relevant experience in the field

 

Professional Background

 

  • 2 or more years’ experience in related field  
  • Experience in analyzing energy policy issues relating to environmental initiatives (energy, climate, air quality, carbon regulation)
  • Developed understanding of the energy sector and of environmental policy instruments including carbon pricing, regulatory mandates, and other market- and non-market instruments.

 

Important Skills & Abilities

 

  • Critical Reading:  Ability to read and digest a variety of policy documents, summarize key points, and evaluate potential impacts to the company and our customers. 
  • Public Speaking:  Comfortable speaking to small and large groups of people with a variety of viewpoints.
  • Technical Communication:  Be able to concisely explain complex scientific concepts at a simplified level for the general public to understand. Use personal judgement and breath of knowledge to elaborate on concepts depending on the audience and level of interest.
  • Climate/ Science: familiarity with basic climate science and policy.  Understanding greenhouse gas emission sources/ chemistry, knowledge of climate regulation and reporting, understanding greenhouse gas emissions in the context of other air contaminates, etc.
  • Government and Agency Experience: experience working with government entities. Understanding of basic structure, responsibilities, and drivers of different departments and levels.
  • Familiar with common economic models and economic theory

Base salary range: $68,650.00 - $94,200.00 per year, depending on qualifications

Annual Target Incentive: Level 2, 7.5% target
Targets are calculated using eligible earnings during plan year participation. Payout, if earned, is based on company and individual performance for each plan year and may range from 0% – 200% of target. Targets are subject to change in subsequent plan years. Must be employed by September 30 in order to receive any prorated payout.
